Stampede In China Leaves A Trail Of Death And Injury

At least 35 people are dead and 42 injured when thousands began to stampede at a New Year’s celebration in Shanghai, China.
Thousands of people gathered in Chen Yi Square on the Bund and according to reports, around 11:35 p.m., people were seen throwing fake US dollars into the crowds from the top of a nightclub right prior to the stampede.
“After we got the call, doctors and nurses here all immediately started preparation for the treatment and the hospital instantly launched a contingency plan for the accident. A large number of patients were sent to the hospital at 00:05,” said Xia Shujie, deputy director of the Shanghai No. 1 People’s Hospital.
“Some of them had suffocation due to lack of oxygen, some were dying and others had no vital signs when they arrived. Most of the patients suffered from suffocation after they were tread upon and some had injuries at their cervical vertebrae and brain stem. The rescue is still ongoing,” said Xia.
Chinese President Xi Jinping released a statement saying “all efforts should be taken to treat the the injured, and that authorities should pay close attention to the aftermath and enhance the security measures to ensure people’s life and property safety during the holiday season.”
