Breaking: Russian Bombers To Patrol Gulf Of Mexico
...what may be Moscow's latest provocative military maneuver...
NORVELL ROSE
In October, 1962, the Cold War almost turned red hot. The United States and the Soviet Union nearly got into a potentially catastrophic shooting war over Soviet ballistic missiles being deployed in Cuba.
The tense stand-off between Kennedy and Khrushchev played out on television worldwide and, as many no doubt remember, was the closest the Cold War came to escalating into an all-out nuclear nightmare.
Fast forward to November, 2014 and and what could become an eerily similar scenario. According to multiple news sources, Russia plans to send long-range bombers to patrol the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.
In what may be Moscow’s latest provocative military maneuver — even as Russian forces continue causing turmoil in Ukraine — Russia’s defense minister says the airborne patrols would bring the bomber flights close to United States’ territorial waters.
As CNN points out, these newly announced maneuvers would be in keeping with recent, bold taunts by the government of Vladimir Putin:
Last month, the Swedish military searched for a mystery underwater vessel after intercepting an emergency radio call in Russian and getting reports about a foreign vessel being spotted in the waters near Stockholm.
Though no vessel was found, it was the largest submarine hunt in Swedish waters since the end of the Cold War.
In September, the United States intercepted six Russian planes, including fighter jets and tankers, in airspace near Alaska, officials said.
In addition, Australia’s defense ministry said it’s monitoring Russian naval vessels patrolling international waters north of Australia.
