The secret service reported that an Iowa man drove across the country with a gun and a knife, on a mission to go to the White House. R. J. Kapheim, 41, walked up to the secret service on the White House grounds and told them some one had told him he should go to the White House.
“He said that someone had told him that he should come to the White House, so he had driven to Washington to do so,” said a senior law enforcement official. “The officers interviewed him there and realized that there needed to be further investigating because something wasn’t right.”
The man consented to a search of his car, parked at the National Mall, where officers found a .30-30 rifle with 40 rounds of ammunition and a six inch knife in the trunk.
Secret service spokesman Nicole Mainor said Kapheim was taken into custody and charged with possession of an unregistered firearm and may face additional charges.
